How to Train a German Shorthaired Pointer to Come When Called

German Shorthaired Pointers are fast, energetic hunting dogs with strong instincts to run and explore. Because of this, one of the most important commands any GSP should learn is a reliable recall. Teaching your German Shorthaired Pointer to come when called can keep them safe and make training, hiking, and hunting much easier.

Recall training should start as early as possible. With my litters, I begin whistle training before feeding time at about 5 weeks. Puppies are naturally more attentive to their owners, which makes it easier to build the habit of coming when called. Begin in a quiet area with very few distractions so your dog can focus on you.

Start by calling your dog’s name followed by a clear command like “come.” When your dog moves toward you, reward them immediately with praise, treats, or a favorite toy. Positive reinforcement helps the dog associate coming to you with something good.

Consistency is important when teaching recall. Always reward your dog for coming when called, especially in the early stages of training. This encourages them to repeat the behavior.

Many trainers recommend using a long training lead during recall practice. A long lead allows your dog to move around freely while still giving you control if they become distracted. If your GSP ignores the command, you can gently guide them back toward you and reward them once they arrive.

German Shorthaired Pointers are extremely intelligent, but they also have strong hunting instincts. Birds, squirrels, and other wildlife can easily distract them. Because of this, recall training should gradually introduce distractions over time.

Begin practicing in slightly more challenging environments such as larger yards, fields, or quiet parks. Each time your dog responds correctly, reward them generously. This helps reinforce that coming back to you is always worthwhile.

Avoid calling your dog only when something negative will happen, such as ending playtime or putting them inside immediately. If your dog learns that coming to you always ends the fun, they may begin ignoring the command.

Instead, frequently call your dog during play sessions and reward them before letting them return to play. This builds a stronger positive association with the recall command.

Some owners also use training tools such as remote training collars when working with high-drive hunting dogs. These tools can help reinforce commands at longer distances when used properly as part of a structured training program.

Regular practice is the key to building a reliable recall. Even well-trained dogs benefit from occasional reinforcement of basic commands.

With patience, consistency, and positive reinforcement, most German Shorthaired Pointers can develop a strong recall that allows them to safely enjoy off-leash activities while staying responsive to their owner.
