Just Got a GSP Puppy? What to Do First (Day 1 Survival Guide)

You don’t get a second chance at Day 1.

If you just brought home a German Shorthaired Pointer puppy, it’s easy to overthink everything — or worse, do too much too fast.

The goal today isn’t training a hunting dog.

It’s keeping things calm, controlled, and setting the right foundation.

First Hour: Keep It Calm and Controlled

When you bring your puppy home:

  • Keep them in a small, controlled area
  • Avoid overwhelming them with people
  • Let them explore at their own pace

This is a big transition. New smells, new people, new environment.

Your job is to make it feel safe — not exciting.

First Step: Outside Immediately

As soon as you get home:

Take your puppy outside

Even if they just went before leaving the breeder.

This starts the pattern early:

  • outside = bathroom
  • inside = clean space

Then repeat this throughout the day:

  • after eating
  • after naps
  • after play

Expect frequent trips.

Start Building a Routine Right Away

You don’t need a strict schedule — but you do need consistency.

Focus on:

  • regular potty breaks
  • consistent feeding times
  • controlled movement (no free roaming)

GSPs are smart and high-drive.

They will learn patterns quickly — good or bad.

Crate Introduction (Do Not Force It)

Your crate is one of the most important tools you’ll use.

On Day 1:

  • let your puppy explore it
  • toss a treat inside
  • keep the door open at first

Avoid forcing them in.

You’re building comfort — not confinement.

Feeding and Water

Stick with the food your breeder was using.

Do NOT switch food on Day 1

Sudden changes can cause:

  • stomach issues
  • stress
  • unnecessary complications

Keep it simple.

First Night: What to Expect

Your puppy will likely:

  • whine
  • wake up
  • need to go outside

This is normal.

Keep things consistent:

  • take them out when needed
  • bring them right back in
  • avoid turning it into playtime

You’re building routine, not rewarding noise.

What NOT To Do on Day 1

Avoid these common mistakes:

  • Too many people or stimulation
  • Long training sessions
  • Loud environments
  • Letting the puppy roam freely

Day 1 should be calm, structured, and controlled.

Don’t Guess Your Way Through the First 30 Days

Day 1 is just the start.

What you do over the next 30 days will shape your dog’s:

  • behavior
  • confidence
  • ability in the field

If you want a clear, no-fluff plan, I put together a complete system for GSP owners:

It walks you through exactly what to focus on
What mistakes to avoid
How to build a solid foundation from day one

Plus, it includes printable trackers to help you stay consistent.

Final Thought

You’re not trying to build a finished dog today.

You’re setting the tone.

Keep it simple. Stay consistent. Build it right from the start.
